Dark Side of the Net: Online Goth Zines and Magazines
This page is intended to list only ONLINE, free zines. Please note that magazines will only be listed
here if they actually offer a substantial portion of their content online. Links to web pages that only
advertised how to order the print magazine have been removed. Please let me know if you run across a zine listed here
that doesn't offer any stuff to read for free, right now, and online!
Dark, Goth and Horror Zines
The AntiCraft - Sinister crafters present us with a delightful blog
and zine. Currently demonstrating an End of Days kit, Anarchist's nightlight, and a breakfast tray made with barely
concealed rage. This is TOO cool!
Ariadne's
Thread - A zine subtitled "A Journal of the Dark." Currently featuring
some short stories, including "The Gardener and The Wyrm," "15 Minutes
as a Corpse," and "Vestal."
Ax Wound Zine - A feminist horror webzine. "I want both the zine and the website to provide a safe,
stimulating environment for feminists who struggle with their enjoyment of these films, and a place to explore what these films are about, and why we
love them so much." The zine offers reviews of movies they've seen, books they've read, and conventions they've attended. The articles include "The
Women of 'Dracula:' A Study of Victorian Gender Identity and Nationalism;" "Menstrual Monsters in the Horror Film," and "Girls, Women, and Enjoyment of
the Horror Genre." This is interesting, I hope they keep producing this zine!
BlueBlood.net - Highly recommended! The paper magazine is legendary,
and its amazing companion website is worth visiting every day or two for new content. High quality articles and photos
on fashion, music, and literature. Blogs, community postings, and a newswire, too. This is pretty much the center of
the goth universe as it stands today. Extremely professional and high quality. Their MySpace page is here.
Chaos Control - A
webzine for darkwave, gothic, and dance music, with interviews and
reviews. Some surprising choices on interview subjects (Devo, Billy Idol).
Cherry Bleeds - A
well done literary zine featuring art and words by suicidal writers. "Published
with blood since '00." Essays, poetry and stories.
Coilhouse - Everywhere I look,
people are raving about this magazine/blog. The buzz surrounding it is
incredible. It covers alternative culture of the past, and imagines it for
the future, ignoring the present with its prepackaged, highly marketed,
commercial faux-alternative culture. There's a blog and a print magazine
that is sold on store shelves. They cover art, fashion, technology,
music, and film. Just to give you an idea, recent blog posts have involved
the death of The Cramps' Lux Interior, Cthulhu meditation, the Edwardian
Ball, and Kathy Acker. Stop what you're doing right now and go visit this
blog!
The Creep
Machine
- A webzine covering alternative, underground, outsider, lowbrow or pop
surrealism art. Much of the art here is quite dark. Interviews, articles,
featured artists, and a gallery.
Dark Culture Magazine -
Cinka publishes monthly, if not more frequently. This site is nice to look
at, and offers news links, a podcast, features and articles, columns, a
photo gallery, and a message board. I enjoy this site even more every time
I come back to it. Highly recommended!
Fear and Trembling - An online webzine publishing dark Christian poetry and fiction.
Fears Magazine - Science fiction, fantasy, and horror. Movie reviews,
book, game and music reviews; art and comics; a pod cast; contests; a monthly scary radio show; and an artwork gallery.
Their MySpace page is here.
Flames
Rising - A horror webzine for fans of horror and dark fantasy
entertainment. Interviews, reviews, articles, blog entries and fiction.
There is a lot of high quality stuff here.
Full Halloween - A horror and paranormal themed webzine, with articles, news, and how-to tips
on Halloween topics.
Gothic Angst Webzine -
Just what I've been craving, a new good goth webzine. This one currently
has articles on decorating for the dark days of winter, art of the oblong
box, album reviews, fashion and music articles, and a column on holiday
shopping. Their MySpace page is here.
Gothtronic - A fabulous
music zine. I'm kicking myself for being so far behind in updates that
I've not stumbled onto this enjoyable zine sooner. Music reviews, ar
ticles, festival info, and movie reviews. Recommended.
Grave Concerns Ezine - Goth, industrial, darkwave, and EBM
music reviews, interviews and news.
The Harrow - A magazine
featuring fantasy and horror fiction, and some occasional poetry and
artwork. I enjoy the stories they publish here. Still going strong in 2007 with
high quality writing. Their MySpace is here.
The Hedgewitch - A seasonal webzine with a focus on gothic and alternative
life. Currently there are columns on spirit journaling and green cleaning, plus articles on pampering yourself with a home
spa and seeing New Orleans on a budget. I'm very impressed so far, I can't wait to see what they do next!
Home Haunt News - A fantastic webzine about Halloween home haunting. You can read it online in HTML
or PDF format. I'm impressed by the high quality articles (and lack of spammy animated banner ads most zines like this have) here. They're also on Twitter.
The Judas Kiss Magazine - A magazine covering dark and
apocalyptic folk music, neo-folk, and dark ambient. Their Myspace is here.
Legends Magazine - "The darker the music, the brighter the mind."
Extremely well known magazine, which started printing in 1990 and got on the net in 1996ish. Music and literary zine
with music reviews, music interviews, DVD/film reviews, fiction and horror, fantasy and sci-fi, book reviews, rants and
essays. Thank the dark gods for Marcus Pan. Sadly, this has not been updated since 2006. I'm leaving the link up in
case you find the reviews archive helpful.
The Mick
- Mick Mercer's free PDF webzine with tons of high quality, well written
goth band interviews, reviews, news, and more.
Morbid Outlook - Mistress McCutchan's very professional, attractive
zine. I'm impressed she's still putting this much work into it. Articles, fiction, reviews, events, radio, postcards on
fashion, music, art, lifestyle. Highly recommended! Their Myspace is here.
Movement Magazine -
In print since 1992, online since 1998. Music news and reviews.
Moving Hands - A very cool zine
covering ebm, industrial, goth, alternative, folk, and industrial music. News, over 1100 music reviews, a music release
calendar, photo gallery, and Nordic alternative charts.
Racks and Razors - A horror webzine, featuring interviews, a radio show, and horror TV and movie
reviews.
Reflections of
Darkness - An excellent dark music webzine, with news, reviews,
interviews, and frequent updates. Cool.
ReGen Magazine - A webzine
with news and articles on industrial, synthpop, electronic, and
alternative music.
Stake Magazine - Art and design, fashion, film and literature are covered in this "online noir
lifestyle magazine." They vehemently deny being goth - that's ok, this zine is still cool!
X-Project Paranormal Magazine - Very well done paranormal
magazine with articles and news on UFOs, ghosts, true crime, and cryptozoology. The magazine doesn't seem to be updated
anymore, but I'm leaving the link as you can still utilize their back archives.
